The official tree of British Columbia, Western Red Cedar, is one of the west coast giants. Growing to heights of 60 m (200 ft) and diameters of 5 m (16 ft) and living for 800 years or more, it makes this one of the world's most impressive trees.

Western redcedar has been known as the tree of life. The wood of the Western Red Cedar is so durable that fallen cedars resting on the forest floor can remain sound for a hundred years or more. This tree typically grows in partially shaded areas where the soil is rich and moisture is abundant.
